Constellation Solar Procurement: Building a Supply Agreement That Scales

Mar 12, 2026 | Mission Applications

Buying solar for a constellation is a different problem than buying for a single satellite. The hardware requirements may look similar, but the procurement structure underneath them has to be built for volume, schedule predictability, and the reality that your program will change between order placement and final delivery.

Most supply agreements in the space solar market were written for a different era. Long lead times baked in as givens. Custom designs negotiated program by program. Pricing structures that don't reflect what actually happens to cost as volume increases. These agreements work fine when you're building one satellite at a time. They create serious problems when you're trying to deliver fifty platforms on a 24-month manifest.

A supply agreement that scales needs a few things that aren't always standard. Pricing that steps down as volume commits increase, with clear triggers rather than renegotiation every time. Delivery schedules tied to a production cadence, not just a contract date, so both sides understand what the factory is actually planning for. Flexibility provisions that allow configuration updates across a production run without triggering full re-qualification on hardware that hasn't materially changed.

The suppliers who can support constellation programs are the ones who have already thought through these structures. They know their cost curve. They know what configuration flexibility their design can absorb. They can tell you exactly what the lead time is at 10 units versus 100, and why.

If your solar supplier can't answer those questions without a weeks-long internal review, that's a signal worth paying attention to before you're 18 months into a program.

Source Energy designed its commercial structure alongside its product. Volume pricing, defined lead times, and agreements built for programs that actually have to scale.
